TAFSIG Coffee Club - Spontaneity in Assessment - Thursday 5th December at 13:00 GMT
Due to recent advances in technology, the veracity of student work and the security of EAP assessments is being challenged, particularly when the task is completed independently, such as submitted written assignments or presentations that can be practised in advance. And even when our students are aware of the importance of academic integrity and want to do the work themselves, some tools are so embedded in software that their use is almost unavoidable.
A year ago in a TAFSIG session, we discussed whether we felt it would be better to move to paper-based exams and secure speaking tests, and about three quarters of participants said “no”. One reason from many as to why is that what is gained in security is outweighed by what is lost in constructive alignment of course content and assessment.
In this upcoming session, there will be the opportunity to discuss with colleagues from around the sector about how we are currently approaching EAP assessment, particularly thinking about spontaneity. If there are spontaneous elements to our assessments we not only introduce aspects that are less vulnerable to being AI-assisted, we also challenge our students to think on their feet and do things in real time, which is itself an important part of the academic experience for many students.
The session will combine some mini-presentations with discussions in breakout rooms. If you have an assessment task that has a spontaneous element that you would like to present about for a couple of minutes, please drop Chris Smith a line at [email protected]. Log-in details for the session will be added here closer to the event.
